Who May Benefit from Clinical Counselling?

We are here for you, no matter the support that you need to improve your mental health. We offer short or long-term counselling services using a variety of approaches: cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), talk therapy, solution-focused therapy, mindfulness and acceptance-based therapies, dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), somatic experiencing, Rogerian therapy, etc.

We offer 50-minute long sessions with a trained and licensed Registered Clinical Counsellor, delivered through Telehealth or in-person (Abbotsford location).

Our services have no formal commitment required (number of sessions), although optimal outcomes require commitment to treatment.

Your initial counselling session consists of introductions, informed consent review, establishing rapport, and conducting formal or informal assessments as needed. Assessments may include questionnaires to evaluate symptoms of anxiety, depression, etc.

FAQs

Q: How many counselling sessions does it take for me to feel better / reach my goals, etc.?

A: Counselling is a very individualized process that is unique for each person and their concerns. Some people seek long-term therapy for ongoing support, and others seek a few sessions to “talk-out” problems and come up with solutions. The frequency and number of sessions is determined by discussion between you and your counsellor depending on your specific situation, goals, needs, and resources.

___

Q: What happens during a typical counselling session?

A: At Back in Motion, we are client-centered, and strive to tailor our counselling sessions and treatments to you and your particular situation. This means that each session is fitted to your personality, style, needs, and goals. Sometimes, this looks like an unstructured conversation where you are given the time and space to discuss and explore what’s going on for you. At other times, sessions are more structured, with your counsellor exploring and sharing pieces of information, strategies, or tools that they think may be of help to you. You and your counsellor will come up with a plan together to help you achieve your goals in therapy.

___

Q: What are the risks and benefits to counselling?

A: Research tells us that counselling therapy can provide many benefits, including:

  • improved quality of relationships
  • clarity and solutions to problems you’re facing
  • improved self-esteem
  • greater self-awareness
  • improved coping skills
  • healing from trauma
  • greater resilience in the face of adversity
  • overall greater sense of well-being and quality of life

As with many things, counselling also comes with its share of risks. These include:

  • experiencing challenging emotions and distress when discussing problems or painful memories
  • experimenting with different behaviours, even those welcomed by the client, that can have a ripple effect in a person’s life and may not be positively received by others in your life
  • there is no guarantee of success
  • Your counsellor will support you through this and help you navigate these experiences should they arise.

___

Q: Is counselling covered by my extended health plan?

A: Clients should refer to their specific Extended Medical Plan coverage for details on services and coverage available. If you have coverage, Back in Motion Health directly bills most Extended Health Plans (verify if your plan is on our list), or provides a medical receipt to be used on request for reimbursement.

At present, the counselling profession is not a regulated profession in BC. This means that a person may call themselves a mental health therapist, counsellor, etc. and may not have the adequate education and training, credentials, or licensing to be approved by your extended health coverage. At Back in Motion, our counsellors are all master’s-level trained mental health professionals that hold a license in good professional standing with the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors, designating them as Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCC). Many extended benefits providers provide coverage for mental health services provided by an RCC. It is important to inquire with your extended benefits provider which mental health professional is accepted under your coverage.
