How to Prepare for Your First ICBC Physiotherapy Session
Are you looking for a physiotherapist covered by ICBC? In this blog, Back in Motion Health explains everything you need to know about ICBC coverage for physiotherapy treatment.
Understanding Your ICBC Coverage
For the first 90 days or 12 weeks following the date of your accident, you are entitled to pre-approved coverage for a number of treatments, including physiotherapy, as per the terms of ICBC. As such, you do not have to obtain approval from ICBC, not do you need to submit a referral from your doctor. All you need to provide to access your coverage is your Personal Health Number (PHN).
Below you will find details on the one-on-one treatments that are covered by ICBC for the period between the 1st of April 2024 and the 31st of March 2025:
Treatment Provider | Number of Approved Sessions | Minimum Duration Time of Treatment Session |
Physiotherapist | 25 | 20 minutes |
Chiropractor | 25 | 15 minutes |
Registered Massage Therapist | 12 | 45 minutes |
Kinesiologist | 12 | 45 minutes |
Psychologist | 12 | 50 minutes |
Clinical Counsellor | 12 | 50 minutes |
Acupuncturist | 12 | 20 minutes |

How to Prepare for Your Appointment
If you have been through a motor vehicle accident and have scheduled a physiotherapy session with ICBC coverage, there are several things that you can do to effectively prepare for your first appointment.
- Show up early at your practitioner’s office to handle all the paperwork before your appointment starts.
- Make sure to bring all the documents pertaining to your ICBC coverage claim with you so that your practitioner’s office can directly bill ICBC for your session.
- Also ensure that you have all the information pertaining to your accident and injuries with you. Your physiotherapist will need this information to devise a treatment plan specific to your medical needs.
- Your physiotherapist will ask you to do several exercises as part of the examination process. It is therefore important that you wear something comfortable.
- Since your physiotherapist will probably want to establish a treatment plan that covers follow-up sessions, it is important that you check your schedule ahead of time to know on which dates to book your next appointments.
Follow-Up ICBC Physiotherapy Sessions
You can benefit from your ICBC coverage for physiotherapy care for up to 90 days following your accident. In case you require any additional sessions, you can ask your physiotherapist to submit a treatment update before the end of your initial coverage period. It is important to make treatment plan requests ahead of time in order to avoid delays in your treatment.
Once the ICBC has approved your extended physiotherapy coverage request, you will have access to additional sessions at no cost to you. At Back in Motion Health, we can directly bill ICBC for all sessions that have been approved.
