Shockwave therapy is a safe, non-invasive procedure often recommended by Orthopedic Surgeons for treating many tendon, muscle and joint disorders.
About Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave therapy, also known as Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT), is a non-invasive procedure that creates a series of pressurized air wave pulsations applied to the skin where the injury is located.
Shockwave therapy stimulates the body’s soft tissues (muscles, tendons, and connective tissue) natural self-healing process and can be very effective in treating subacute, sub chronic, chronic conditions as well as recurrent or unresolved conditions.
Administered by one of our registered physical therapists, shockwave therapy is a non-surgical option that in some cases, can provide results as effective as surgery, in as little as three to five sessions.
Is Shockwave Therapy recommended for me?
This therapy is often utilized the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions (involving connective tissues such as tendons and ligaments), and it is an effective modality for pain management and to increase function/ mobility in various conditions, such as:
Elbow Tendinopathy (tennis and golfer’s elbow)
Patellar Tendinopathy (Jumper’s Knee)
Rotator cuff tendinopathy
Your Physiotherapist will assess your condition and determine if Shockwave Therapy is ideal for you. Before Your Appointment
The Health and Safety of our clients and staff is Back in Motion’s #1 priority. Back in Motion internal Health & Safety Committee has developed and implemented a comprehensive Safety Plan, to make our clinics safe for clients and staff. We have made changes to the facilities, operational and administrative processes. To review our plan, review our Covid-19 Safety Plan page.
At the booking time (in-person, phone or online), you will perform a health assessment check, to verify if you are experiencing any Covid-19 related symptoms. This health assessment will be redone 36 hours prior to your appointment, and at your appointment time.
If you have booked your appointment, but you are experiencing Covid-19 related symptoms, please call us to cancel your appointment, and seek help with your family physician or nurse practitioner, or by calling 8-1-1.
If there are any specific preparations required for your appointment, you will be advised prior to your appointment day.
During Your Appointment
In your first visit, your Physiotherapist will perform a comprehensive assessment to determine if Shockwave Therapy is appropriate for your injury or health condition. If you are an ideal candidate, you will be educated about the therapy, what to expect during and after treatment. The treatment itself last a few minutes. You may feel a little pain or discomfort in the treatment area during the procedure. Most clients refer as “small pulses against the skin”.
At the end of the session, you will be reminded to book your follow-up appointments, when needed. You may do that with your clinician, call one of our locations, or book online.
After Your Appointment
After your session you will be able to move the body part normally, and you may notice a reduction of your pain right after the session. After a few hours of your session, you may experience mild soreness, tenderness, bruising, swelling, numbness or tingling in the treated area, due to the activation of the natural inflammatory response. Recovery is fast and it is minimal compared with that of surgical intervention. Refrain from taking any anti-inflammatory medications after your treatment, as this may slow-down the natural healing, and impact on results.
It is recommended that you refrain from any activity that creates stress in the treated area for 48 hours after each treatment. You will be able to drive immediately after your session.
