7 Reasons to See a Pelvic Physiotherapist in London, Ontario

July 3rd, 2025

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is a highly specialized area of care that can help people of all ages manage and overcome a range of pelvic health issues. At Back in Motion Health’s new clinic in London, Ontario, we’re proud to offer comprehensive pelvic health physiotherapy to help patients live more comfortably and confidently.

If you’re experiencing pelvic pain, discomfort, or dysfunction, you’re not alone—and there’s help available. Here are some common conditions we treat and why seeing a pelvic physiotherapist in London could be a life-changing decision.

  1. Bladder or Bowel Incontinence

If you suffer from bladder or bowel incontinence, pelvic physiotherapy can help retrain your muscles and nervous system to restore control, often significantly improving quality of life.

  1. Bladder or Bowel Urgency/Frequency

Do you find yourself rushing to the bathroom frequently or feeling like you can’t fully empty your bladder or bowels? These symptoms can point to pelvic floor dysfunction. Our physiotherapists in London can help reduce urgency and improve function using evidence-based techniques.

  1. Constipation

Chronic constipation isn’t just a digestive issue—it can be closely tied to how your pelvic floor muscles are functioning. A pelvic physiotherapist can assess whether muscle coordination or tension is playing a role and guide you through gentle, effective strategies to improve regularity.

  1. Pelvic Organ Prolapse

A feeling of heaviness or pressure in the pelvic area, especially after childbirth, may be a sign of prolapse. Through tailored exercises and manual therapy, our pelvic floor physiotherapists can help you reduce symptoms and support pelvic organ health.

  1. Pelvic Muscle Tightness or Weakness

Whether your pelvic floor muscles are too tight, too weak, or both, physiotherapy can make a difference. This condition can cause pain, incontinence, or difficulty with daily tasks. We’ll help you restore optimal function and strength.

  1. Pain During Sexual Activity

Pain with intimacy can be deeply distressing. It can result from pelvic floor muscle dysfunction, scar tissue, or nerve sensitivity. Our London-based pelvic physiotherapists approach this issue with care and professionalism, offering treatment options to reduce discomfort and improve intimacy.

  1. Low Back, Pelvic, or Tailbone Pain

Pain in these areas—especially during pregnancy or postpartum—often relates to the pelvic floor. Pelvic physiotherapy, including both internal and external treatments, can be highly effective in reducing chronic or activity-related discomfort.

What Does Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Involve?

A typical treatment plan may include a combination of the following:

  • Internal and External Manual Therapy: Manual therapy involves hands-on techniques to assess and treat the muscles, joints, and connective tissues of the pelvic region. Internal therapy (vaginal or rectal) can help release tension, reduce pain, and improve muscle activation. External therapy targets surrounding areas such as the hips, abdomen, and lower back to support overall pelvic function.

  • Targeted Exercises: These are specific exercises designed to either strengthen weak pelvic floor muscles or relax and stretch muscles that are overactive or tight. This might include Kegels (when appropriate), core stabilization, breathing techniques, and full-body movement strategies that support pelvic alignment and function.

  • Posture and Movement Education: How you sit, stand, move, and lift objects all influence your pelvic health. Your physiotherapist will assess your posture and body mechanics, providing simple but powerful adjustments to reduce strain on your pelvic floor and improve overall body alignment.

  • Biopsychosocial Interventions: Pelvic health is influenced by more than just the muscles—stress, anxiety, sleep, lifestyle, and past experiences can all play a role. Your therapist may incorporate mindfulness strategies, relaxation techniques, and guidance on managing daily habits to help reduce symptoms and improve long-term outcomes.
