October 14th, 2024

When it comes to physiotherapy, most people relate it to the treatment of pain or mobility issues caused by accidents or traumatic events. Even though it is true that physiotherapy can be very helpful in these situations, there is a wide range of other conditions that can also be treated by it. In this blog, we are going to explore five different conditions that your physiotherapist can help with.

Pelvic Floor Pain and Dysfunction

One of the surprising conditions that physiotherapists can help you with is pelvic dysfunction. Due to different circumstances, some people experience pelvic pain during intercourse, abnormal discomfort when urinating and muscle spasms in the pelvic area. Experienced physiotherapists will be able to address the problem by prescribing specific exercises tailored to rehabilitate and strengthen the pelvic muscles, which alleviates the symptoms and provides comfort.

Dizziness and Balance Issues

You would be surprised to know that dizziness and balance Issues can also be treated with physiotherapy. This is because vertigo is commonly caused by issues in the inner ear, which can be treated with specific exercises prescribed by a physiotherapist. Common examples include balance training, repositioning maneuver and other exercises. If you are suffering from chronic dizziness, physiotherapy is an alternative to consider.

Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMJ)

If you sometimes hear your jaw clicking or feel discomfort and pain in your jaw early in the morning, you may be suffering from temporomandibular joint disorder. Among various ways of treating the condition, physiotherapy can greatly reduce the symptoms of TMJ. Through professional manual intervention and the prescription of home exercises, a physiotherapist can provide you with an efficient and non-invasive treatment alternative.

Respiratory Illnesses

Another way that a physiotherapist can help you is by contributing to the treatment of respiratory illnesses. For instance, if you suffer from certain types of pulmonary diseases, specific breathing exercises, and aerobic training can significantly improve your breathing capabilities. These techniques can increase the amount of oxygen in your lungs, which helps attenuate a wide variety of breathing issues. If you are suffering from respiratory illnesses, physiotherapy can greatly improve your quality of life.

Neurological Issues

It is a common misconception that physiotherapy is exclusively used to treat physical conditions. The truth is that there is a wide range of neurological issues that can also be treated or attenuated with sessions of physiotherapy. For instance, conditions such as ALS, multiple sclerosis, and stroke can often have their symptoms reduced with the help of an experienced physiotherapist. This is because specific exercises can help the brain create neural pathways and recover part of its functions. For that reason, apart from helping with physical related problems, physiotherapy can also be helpful with neurological issues.
