ICBC Services – Frequently Asked Questions

I have an active claim. What services can I utilize? Can I see more than one therapist at once?

With an active ICBC claim (within 3 months of the date of the accident), most patients are approved for Kinesiology, Massage Therapy, Physiotherapy and Counselling. Clients may see more than one therapist at the simultaneously.  In some instances, Occupational Therapists may also be approved to be part of your treatment plan.

What therapies are accessible to me under my claim?

Clients may be eligible to:

  • Physiotherapy (25 sessions)
  • Massage Therapy (12 sessions)
  • Kinesiology and Active Rehabilitation (12 sessions)
  • Counselling (12 sessions)

Your claim will contain details of pre-approved treatments and costs.

* Please note that for RMT subsequent appointments, ICBC partly covers the 45-minute (or longer) sessions. An additional user fee applies and must be paid by the patient. You may be able to claim the additional costs under your Extended Health provider. This additional cost cannot be done through direct billing; you will need to submit your receipts and request reimbursement directly from your Extended Health provider.

How do I pay my treatment if I have an active ICBC claim?

Back in Motion does direct billing of pre-approved treatment costs to ICBC.

How should I structure my appointments?

Each service will have an assessment and subsequent treatment sessions. In order to maximize the benefits of each therapy, Back in Motion suggests some treatment pairings. Your clinician will be able to guide you and recommend therapies that are aligned to your treatment plan.

You may book your appointment(s) online. If you require assistance booking appointments back-to-back, speak with our friendly staff today. They will help you to find a treatment pairing appointment that is convenient for you.

How soon can I get back to exercise?

Movement is Medicine! It is important to maintain healthy muscles by doing movements and light exercises to keep them healthy and strong. You can start working with a Kinesiologist within days of your accident.

How much does it cost?

Your claim will contain details of pre-approved treatments and costs. Clients that utilize their pre-approved costs will not incur any cost. All treatment costs covered by ICBC will be directly billed to ICBC.

Please note that for RMT subsequent appointments, ICBC partly covers the 45-minute (or longer) sessions. An additional user fee applies and must be paid by the patient.

If Client opts for booking longer appointments (from what has been pre-approved), clients are responsible for paying the additional cost. These costs may be covered by your extended health plan, but they cannot be claimed through direct billing. Back in Motion will provide you receipts for the additional cost, and you will be responsible for submitting the reimbursement requests directly to your health plan.

What if I am still in pain after the initial 3 months?

Some people will require more treatments and your therapist will request that to ICBC on your behalf. Most happy patients are discharged from the therapists’ care but given a continued path to follow on their own (i.e.: to kinesiology, home exercises, and/or maintenance treatment plan).

Are there any additional user fees?

ICBC partly covers the 45-minute (or longer) registered massage therapy sessions. An additional user fee must be paid by the patient. Some extended health plans may cover the additional fee. Direct billing is available for the ICBC portion, but not available for the user fee. More details are available upon inquiry.

Can I go for treatment in two different clinics under the same claim?

Clients may attend different therapy treatments at different clinics and/or different therapists. For example, you may attend Physiotherapy appointments in one clinic/location and Massage Therapy in another clinic/location. However, clients are not allowed to use the same treatment in different clinics and locations; i.e. go for a Physiotherapy appointment today in a clinic/location and tomorrow go to another clinic/location.

My claim is older than 3 months, what should I do?

Physician referral is required to extend your claim, and ICBC approval will be required prior to booking your appointment. If you attend an appointment and pay privately, when your claim is approved, you will receive the reimbursement from us.

Can I get longer appointments than the ones covered by ICBC?

Yes. Additional user fees apply to the sessions longer than the ones covered by ICBC. Clients are responsible for paying for the additional cost if they book longer than 45-minute appointments. You may be able to claim the additional costs under your Extended Health provider. This additional cost cannot be done through direct billing; you will need to submit your receipts and request reimbursement directly from your Extended Health provider.

For RMT subsequent appointments, ICBC partly covers the 45-minute (or longer) sessions. An additional user fee applies and must be paid by the patient.

How soon (after an accident) is it safe for me to get treatment?

As soon as you can! The old idea of “rest for a few days” has been disproven as harmful to one’s recovery. The best thing you can do after an injury is stay engaged in your care, get assessed and treated as soon as you’re able, and light, pain-free movement!

How long before I feel better?

Your recovery will depend on your injury, timing between accident and access of treatment, your treatment plan and commitment to recovery. Your practitioner team will assess and propose the best treatment plan, individualized for your needs. Throughout treatment, you will be re-assessed and asked about changes/progress in your symptoms. Your treatment will be modified as needed to support your recovery.

What happens when my sessions are completed?

At the end of your sessions, each therapist you see will conduct a re-assessment to see where you are at in your recovery. This will be communicated with you so you know what your next steps will be. You may be able to continue with a maintenance program after your claim has ended.

Workplace injuries are usually due to trauma or overuse. If you have been injured as a result of a workplace activity, our team of experts at Back in Motion can perform a comprehensive assessment and develop a treatment plan to reduce your symptoms and rehabilitate your injury.

If your claim is approved by WSBC, your initial assessment is 100% covered with a WorkSafeBC Claim number. Once your claim has been accepted by WorkSafeBC, the full treatment cost of your appointments will be funded (within the approved time parameters). When you are ready, your physiotherapist will work with you, your employer, physician, and WorkSafeBC Case Manager to develop a safe and appropriate return to work plan. If your claim has been denied or is disallowed, the expenses will need to be covered by the Client.
