What Happens During a Kinesiology Consultation
Kinesiology is a holistic approach to health that focuses on human movement and function. Your first consultation with a kinesiologist is an important step in understanding your body and developing a personalized plan for improvement. Back in Motion Health has prepared the following explanation about what happens during a kinesiology consultation.
The Purpose of a Kinesiology Consultation
The main purpose of a kinesiology consultation is threefold:
- to assess your health and movement patterns
- to identify the cause(s) of any dysfunction
- to develop a personalized plan to improve your well-being
The Kinesiology Consultation: Part 1
Kinesiologists attain their purpose through assessment and information gathering that begins with a conversation with you about your medical history. They will ask questions about your:
- medical history
- lifestyle
- health concerns/existing conditions
- health and wellness goals
- reasons for seeking out the advice of a kinesiologist
From there, the kinesiologist will conduct a thorough physical examination that often includes:
- evaluating your posture and range of motion
- testing your muscle strength and flexibility
- assessing your gait and movement patters
- identifying muscles imbalances by using a muscle response test during which the kinesiologist applies gentle pressure to a specific muscle while you resist. Further biofeedback is gathered through your muscles’ response to various stimuli including substances and statements.
The Kinesiology Consultation: Part 2
Once your kinesiologist has finished with their assessment, they will discuss their findings with you and explain how they relate to your concerns that led to your visit. Before you leave the consultation, your kinesiologist will propose a treatment plan that may include:
- specific exercises or stretches
- lifestyle modifications
- nutritional advice
- ergonomic recommendations
- follow-up appointments
How to Prepare for Your Kinesiology Consultation
To help ensure that your kinesiologist can complete a full assessment, discuss their findings, and propose a treatment plan within the allotted consultation and to make sure you have enough time to speak about your health and ask questions, it is a good idea to prepare your medical history ahead of time, which may mean:
- requesting or gathering medical reports or imaging results from other health care professionals, including your primary care physician
- preparing or finding a list of current medications and supplements
Other than that, relax. The kinesiologist you will meet is a trained professional who wants to help you feel and live your best.
Arrive at your kinesiology consultation appointment 10 minutes early, so you can fill out any necessary paperwork and settle in. it is important to be:
- dressed in comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily
- prepared to talk about your health and lifestyle
- equipped with the health information listed above, your provincial health card, and any health insurance information you may have
